At Pyhä, we believe that time spent in the fells can benefit people without taking anything away from the surrounding nature. A responsible holiday is built on everyday choices – even small actions can have a big impact. Here are five tips to help you enjoy Pyhä while respecting nature and the local community.
1. Travel and get around sustainably
- You can reach Pyhä by overnight train to Kemijärvi or Rovaniemi, and continue to your destination with connecting transport – public transport is a great way to reduce the emissions of your trip.
- Getting around is easy without a car: on foot, by skis, or using local transport services if needed.
- At Pyhä, the lifts run on renewable energy, making it possible to access the fell responsibly without having to walk.
2. Choose responsible accommodation
- Choose accommodation that takes responsibility seriously: recycling options, the use of renewable energy, and recognized sustainability certifications are all good indicators, such as the Green Key certification at Ski-Inn accommodations.
- Turn off lights and electrical devices when leaving, and keep doors and windows closed to retain heat, even in winter conditions.
- Shorter showers and mindful sauna use help save both energy and water.
- Book cleaning only when needed – this reduces the consumption of water, detergents, and energy.
3. Leave nothing behind but ski tracks
- Always dispose of your waste properly in bins or recycling points. If one is full, use the next available one.
- Sort your waste according to the accommodation’s instructions and use local recycling points.
- Stay on marked routes and trails in nature and familiarize yourself with outdoor etiquette in advance.
- Choose activities that respect nature, such as skiing, snowshoeing, or simply enjoying the peaceful fell landscapes.
4. Respect others while enjoying activities
- Familiarize yourself with the slope rules and safety guidelines before participating in activities.
- Treat others kindly, intervene in inappropriate behavior, and seek help from staff if necessary. Our staff is required to address any inappropriate behavior.
- The sense of peace and unhurried atmosphere at Pyhä is part of the experience – allow others to enjoy it as well.
5. Support local
- Choose to dine at restaurants that value local ingredients and flavors.
- Buy souvenirs from local entrepreneurs and artisans in Pyhä and nearby areas – this supports local vitality.
