Our Economic Responsibility and Governance

We take responsibility for our financial sustainability – for us, responsibility is not merely a legal obligation, but something that guides all our operations.

As a family business, we have been developing our ski resorts for over 70 years. Currently, the second generation is in charge, with the goal of passing the company on to the third generation.

As one of the largest companies in the area, we are actively involved in building the local vitality of Pelkosenniemi.

Our family business story

The roots of Aho Group’s tourism business were planted in the 1960s. A young father, Jussi, spent his free time fishing along the Kitka River and fell in love with the landscapes of Kuusamo during his travels. In the 1970s, Jussi acquired a share in Ruka. Before long, he became the majority owner of the slope company and began rapidly developing the area. In the late 1980s, the Pyhä ski resort was also added to the group.

Jussi’s heartfelt wish was to involve the next generation in the business. This became reality: his children Kari Jussi Aho, Miia Porkkala, and Ville Aho have built their careers in the fells in various roles. Antti Aho and Annakaija Lappalainen, in turn, have developed Aho Group’s wellbeing and healthcare sector. The sibling owners aim to continue boldly developing the companies along the path laid out by their father.

We do not pursue short-term gains – for us, a quarter spans 25 years:

  • We pay our taxes in Finland.
  • We allocate 65% of our results to developing our operations.
  • We provide financial support to initiatives and projects that promote local community spirit and vitality.
  • We invest in climate adaptation by increasing snow reliability and improving the wind resilience of lifts.
  • We are committed to the long-term development of year-round tourism services. Year-round operations create regional vitality, economic sustainability, and jobs.
  • We make a local impact: We actively oppose mining activities in key tourism areas and in regions that are particularly sensitive from the perspective of Arctic nature.
